In 1993 the Californian based “ECLIPSE”, a company that produced comics and graphic novels, had the licence to produce a comic based on 007 and were looking to expand into the growing trading card market, and that first set of trading cards had to be based on Bond..... James Bond. To coincide with the 30th anniversary of James Bond, the trading card set was announced in the companies newsletter “Eclipse Extra”, the newsletters were distributed for free in comic stores. But as you can notice, the release date for the cards was a year late.

"Eclipse Extra Newletter"

The complete set existed of a 110 card base set and two chase cards. The set contains pictures from the first four James Bond movies, “Dr. No”, “From Russia With Love”, “Goldfinger” & “Thunderball”. Collectors call this set “The Gold Card Series”, because each card has a golden border. If we look back to the “Moonraker” sticker set we could say that this was the first chase set ever produced, in fact it was an easy set to chase, they were inserted by one in each pack. Both hologram cards are perhaps the first James Bond chase cards ever made, sadly they are of such poor quality. Even today this Gold Card Series is quiet easy to purchase on eBay, movie fairs etc… for very reasonable prices. Each box contained 432 cards, and with a bit of good luck you could create two sets out of one box, including the chase cards.

"Counter Dislay Box"

The counter display box was simple but striking, showing a promotion picture of Sean Connery as secret agent 007 in “From Russia With Love”. The text on the counter display box mentioned the two hologram cards. The left and right side showed some card examples and mentioned James Bond 007. “Eclipse” also manufactured a three ring collectors album (See the chapter on the Second Series)..

"Oddjob Hologram Card"
"Aston Martin DB5 Hologram Card"

As mentioned before, both hologram cards were of very poor quality. The first one is a picture of Goldfinger’s henchman Oddjob taken from the model kit manufactured by Aurora in the sixties. The second hologram card shows a picture of the toy Aston Martin DB5.
.

"Gold Series Wrapper"

The wrappers were beautiful designed, depicting some artwork of a James Bond silhouette seen through the eye of a gun barrel. This design continued to the “Second Series” wrappers, only adding a yellow and blue caption “Second Series”. The wrapper reverse mentioned the three ring binder and collector sheets. A custom imprinted vinyl 3-ring binder with 13 clear 9-pocket plastic sheets enough to hold the entire 110 card set. You just had to send $6,95 plus $2,00 p&h to Eclipse Enterprises to obtain your personal binder.

A complete pictorial overview on all the cards starts here. Notice that the cutting was not as it should be, some golden borders are not equal for all the cards. The reverse had a smaller black & white still and some text explaining the picture in the front. Most of the pictures shown in the front are copies from German lobby cards. In my opinion, very strange for an American card set. Card N°.109 uses both sides to display the cast & credits from "Dr. No" to "Thunderball" and card N°.110 uses both sides for the card checklist.
