Who and what is GE Fabbri Ltd; it is in fact two companies, the UK based GE Publishing and the Italian publisher “Rizzoli Corriere della Sera” (RCS). The UK based company was founded in 1986 by three partners, Liz Glaze, Peter Edwards and Phil Costick. Since 1990 the two companies started working together under the name of GE Fabbri Ltd. The head quarters are located in Central London and they employ about fifty people. Combining the companies seemed to work out very well for both of them. It’s for the third time that GE Fabbri Ltd. placed a bet on the James Bond adventures. Their first adventure started in 2002 with the “Spy Files” cards. In 2006 they started to manufacture the diecast cars of James Bond, this series was issued in several countries across Europe and the first Japanese issue was available in April 2009. In May 2009 the diecast car series had reached issue 60, with the rumour of it finishing around issue 70 sometime in October. But that was in 2009, today February 2012, I received car 96.

"The Covers of Issue 1,2 & 4"

The third publication is a new magazine issued every fortnight accompanied by a pack of game cards. Again the content of the new “007 Spy Cards Commander” magazine was aiming to the would be younger spies and collectors. Each magazine was packed with new pictures of James Bond, his glamorous Bond Girls and all kinds of spy things to become a real spy, with a number of features reprinted from there previous Spy Files magazine. Unlike the first Spy Files magazine all the cards were released from the start and you could also buy booster packs or a complete box. Fans here snapped up the first issue by the dozen, the reason it was less expensive than buying the booster packs, the result being the issue selling out in most shops and it being a Bond buster success for the company. In 2007 and only in certain areas of Britain they issued a few magazines to assess the sales. The card set that was issued during this sales assessment contained only 80 cards, 60 common cards, 10 rare cards, 5 super rare cards and 5 ultra rare cards. It seems that card number 16 “Kamal Khan” is the rarest of all. The test series is almost identical to the first 80 cards of the full set. The difference lays in the super rare and ultra rare cards. The super rare cards from the test set have a different tint to them, with it reflecting horizontally. In the national set the super rare cards have a vertical tint. In the test series the super rare cards are numbered as following; 13, 14, 34, 63 & 78. In the complete series the super rare cards are numbered like this; 13, 14, 34, 62, 63, 71 & 78. Among the first 80 cards in the full set there are only three ultra rare cards, 19, 40 & 49. Because of the enormous success that came from the test areas, GE Fabbri Ltd. issued at the begin of 2008 the “007 Spy Cards Commander” card series.

"Counter Display Box"

New for this card series was the fact that you could also buy the packs individually for a retail price of 1,50£ per pack. Also a complete counter display box containing 32 packs was available for retail. Like the previous “Spy Files” there was a magazine subscription that offered you a complete assortment of gadgets and bonuses.

  • A cardboard magazine holder.
  • Four hard to find cards, from the set.
  • A card collector’s wallet.
  • Three bonus packs with cards.
  • A burglar alarm.
  • Exclusive 007 card, this card had a different finish to the regular rare 007 card, by turning it into a super rare it was only available via the subscription offer, both cards featured the same image of Daniel Craig as James Bond and the same game play information.

"Advertising all the free gifts"

"Inside a magazine"

To sell a product these days, marketing and product advertising is everything. The same formula goes for trading cards. The marketing section at GE Fabbri is very aware of this, so in order to sell their latest product, all of the mentioned gadgets were carefully announced on the internet, posters, magazines, newspaper stands, etc... Notice some of the advertising here above and below.

"Poster and Checklist on the reverse"

"Test Set Poster and Checklist on the reverse"

As a bonus with the first magazine you received a free “Spy Pen”. This special pen has a hidden ultra violet light to enable you to read the secret codes on some of cards.

"Spy Pen, Exclusive with the First Issue"

The bonus that came with the second issue was a large tin box with enough capacity for safe storage of your precious game cards. The test series came with a small attaché case instead of the large tin box.

"The collection tin came as a free gift with issue 2, a black attache case came with the test set "

Compared to the expensive Rittenhouse card series, this is really collecting again, the youngsters could trade their spare cards with friends or fellow collectors in the school yard in order to compile the whole series. Just as the previous card series the cards are beautiful designed and perfectly finished. During the printing process, some errors or misprints occurred, most of these errors show a full white reverse instead of a sky blue gunbarrel with the 007 trademark. The cards were packed in a shiny blue metal foil wrapper displaying a picture of Daniel Craig as James Bond agent 007.

"Commander Set Wrapper"

To actually play the game, the series is divided into five different categories, namely the “Gadget” cards, the “Ally” cards, the “Bond” cards, the ”Villain” cards and the “Vehicle” cards and is based along the lines of the top trump card game. Each category is recognizable by the little logo printed in the cards upper right corner.

The 007 Spy Cards Commander series contains a huge 275 game cards, the cards are divided into four different levels such as; 226 common cards inserted by 8 per pack, 33 rare cards inserted by 1 per pack, 10 super rare cards inserted by 1/6 packs and 6 ultra rare cards inserted by 1/24 packs. The rare cards are always printed on a glossy base and the super rare cards contain a holographic effect. The ultra rare cards contain a moving image or a so called lenticular effect, today it is these ultra rare cards that fetch the highest prices, as many were printed in very limited numbers. Many of the game cards contain an invisible UV code, witch can only be deciphered with the “Spy Pen” that was issued with the first magazine.
And last but not least, one of the gadgets that came with the magazine subscription. The Commander Set Mini Burglar Alarm including a detailed users manual. “For your eyes only James”.

"Mini Burglar Alarm & Users Manual"

On the left we have a card taken from the test set. Notice the numbering below in the right corner. It says 014/080. The numbering on the national set says 014/275.
