The "James Bond Archives 2014 Edition" is the biggest James Bond trading card set ever produced by any known card manufacturer. To me this card set is really madness, 699 cards if counted correctly by using my scientific calculator. A base set of 99 cards retelling the whole “Casino Royale” movie, 99 throwback style “Thunderball” cards to follow the previous “Goldfinger” throwback style card set, 120 throwback style cards retelling the first Roger Moore James Bond movie “Live And Let Die” and 93 full colour cards to cover Pierce Brosnan's second James Bond movie “Tomorrow Never Dies”. Ok guys that was the easy part. The 99 “Casino Royale” cards and the 93 “Tomorrow Never Dies” cards also have a Parallel Gold Card set. These gold foil stamped cards can only be found in 1/24 packs. Then there are 19 “SkyFall” expansion cards to complete or should I say expand your previous Rittenhouse card sets, 19 Relic cards to be found in only 1/60 packs and 51 Autograph cards to be found in 1/12 packs. For the die hard collectors there is a case topper BG74 showing a picture of Miss Moneypenny, a 6-case incentive card with a golden signature from Roger Moore. This is the first Gold Signature Series Autograph card and as a 9-case incentive there is a dual autograph card signed by Daniel Craig and Judi Dench. The reward card is the "Bond Girls Are Forever" card BG75 showing a picture of Berenice Marlohe. And at last we have three promo cards P1, P2 and P3 exclusive to the binder. The counter display box is manufactured in a shiny golden cardboard displaying Daniel Craig in a "SkyFall" scène. The cards are wrapped by only six in a beautiful gold foil wrapper.

The promotion started in august 2014 when the Rittenhouse website made a first announcement for the new James Bond trading card set to be released on the 22nd October 2014. As a presale on eBay, a complete case (12 boxes) could be bought on the 1st September. The web site published a downloadable colour ad page on the 4th September 2014 and the checklist was available on the 10th October 2014. The first promotion card P1 is a generally distributed card given away to dealers, the second promotion card P2 is given away at conventions and the third card P3 is a bonus when purchasing the binder. Each card shows a picture of Daniel Craig in his first role as agent 007 in the James Bond movie “Casino Royale”.

An ad-sheet could be downloaded from the Rittenhouse site on the 4th September 2014. The information on the sheet is disappointing, only mentioning about two autograph cards in each box. Nothing about the number of cards per pack, packs per box, number of cases, very poor. The ad-sheet is shown here below.

“Throwback Style”

Let’s go back to basics, in 2002 Rittenhouse came up with a basic card set covering the James Bond movie "Die Another Day". After that we had to wait until 2013 for a basic set retelling the full story of "SkyFall". There was only a "Casino Royale" Preview set in 2006 holding 9 cards and one costume card CC7 holding a piece of fabric from Daniel Craig's tuxedo. Today 22nd October 2014 we have a basic set retelling the whole "Casino Royale" movie. There are 99 cards to collect and each counter display box holds at least one base set. The first subset is a 99 card "Thunderball" set in the famous throwback style. The black and white cards can be found in 1/6 packs. Since Somportex came up in 1965 with a 72 card "Thunderball" set and the USA manufacturer Philadelphia in 1966 with a 66 card set also covering "Thunderball", it's the first time we see a full set in black and white covering the whole movie in trading card format. The second subset is 120 cards covering "Live And Let Die" in throwback style. Why do they jump from "Thunderball" to "Live And Let Die" instead of "You Only Live Twice"? I really don't know. The cards are randomly inserted in 1/6 packs. The third subset to collect is a 93 card set covering the movie "Tomorrow Never Dies". Why did they choose for "Tomorrow Never Dies", again I honestly don't know. In 1997 a company by the name of Inkworks already put a full card set on the market for Pierce Brosnan's second James Bond adventure. In my opinion they should have gone for "Quantum Of Solace".

In 1997 a company by the name of Inkworks already put a full card set on the market for Pierce Brosnan's second outing as James Bond. In my opinion they should have gone for "Quantum Of Solace". The cards can be found in 1/6 packs. The reverse is split up into two parts, a picture part and a text part that explains what's going on in the front.

“Golden Parallel Cards”

Now the trouble starts, the "Casino Royale" card set and the "Tomorrow Never Dies" card set have a golden parallel set displaying exactly the same cards only having an embossed golden logo. These golden parallel cards are inserted in 1/24 packs or just 1 card per box. Each card has been individually numbered from #001 to #125. So they are extremely limited and very high priced.

"Tomorrow Never Dies"

“The SkyFall Expansions”

“The Complete James Bond”

To complete or expand the previous James Bond trading card sets produced by Rittenhouse, they designed nineteen "SkyFall" expansion cards. Including nine cards to expand "The Complete James Bond" card set. When storing those cards in the famous nine-pocket sleeves, then the reverse composes a nine-card puzzle of the original movie poster. The Complete James Bond card set was updated for the first time in March 2009 with a "Quantum Of Solace" expansion. This second update makes "The Complete James Bond" card set again complete. The cards are inserted into 1/12 packs or just two per box, the numbering simply continues from were it ended in 2009.

“James Bond Mission Logs ”

The "James Bond Mission Logs" trading cards were released in May 2011, only a year before "SkyFall" was filling up the big screens all around the world. The set contained three cards for each movie up to "Quantum Of Solace". To update this set three new cards were added to the collection and numbered as 67, 68 & 69. With some good luck you may find two cards in every box.

“James Bond Villains”

The first part of the villain cards saw the living daylights in November 2004 as a subset from "The Quotable James Bond". During the following decade (2004-2014) the set was updated several times and ended with number F81. As part of the "SkyFall" expansions two cards are added to the collection. Card F82 showing a picture of Silva played by Javier Bardem and card F83 showing a picture of Patrice played by Ola Rapace. The newcomers are BA46 through BA50 showing pictures of Ben Whishaw as the new "Q", Dame Judi Dench as "M", Ralph Fiennes as Gareth Mallory, Naomie Harris as the new Miss Moneypenny & Albert Finney as Kincade. “Allies Error Cards”

For the fifth time this set received an update and during all those updates there were a few errors. Card BA34 can be found with Rosika Miklos or with Rory Kinnear. The error is only visible on the card reverse: giving the same number and a different date. Card BA35 has either a picture of Bernard Lee as "M" or Norman Burton as Felix Leiter: again the same number and different dates. Card BA36 can be found with again Bernard Lee as "M" or with Shirley Eaton as Jill Masterson in Goldfinger. BA36 is exactly the same card as one of the B35's only showing different dates. Card BA39 shows the same front as one of the BA35's but the reverse pictures are shifted from left to right and a different date is visible. See below for a pictorial overview on the errors.

“The Prop/ Relic Cards”

Props and Relics are the most wanted items among the James Bond memorabillia collectors, woudn't you like to have an original Lotus Esprit or an Aston Martin fully loaded with gadgets? Well here is your chance to own a little piece of all those wonderfull relics. The relics started in june 2010 as a subset from the "James Bond Heroes & Villains" trading card set. At the time there were 12 relic cards numbered from JBR1 through JBR12, 2 cards were missing JBR6 and JBR11. The following year 13 cards were added and numbered from JBR14 to JBR 26. The missing card JBR6 came as a 3-case incentive. So we were still missing JBR 11 and JBR 13. The 50th Anniversary Series One and Two trading card sets gave birth to JBR27 and JBR28. With the release of the "Archives 2014 Edition" all the gaps are filled and 17 cards are added. See the list below for more details. Each item has been carefully selected by Rittenhouse and inserted into a special card. These cards are thicker than usual but necessary to hold the relic. The relics are distributed in 1/60 packs. With some luck you may find one in three boxes. The cards are very rare and quiet expensive, the limitation goes from #110 up to #500. The oldest piece is taken from the helicopter in "From Russia With Love".

“The Autograph Cards”

Many card collectors just go for the autograph cards, Rittenhouse managed to have 51 cards signed by 48 actors and actresses including Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore and many more. For the first time we have a Director, a Set Designer and the James Bond theme writer. Each box holds two autograph cards. There are 16 cards in the "40th Anniversary" style, the card numbering for this particular style goes until A258, missing numbers are A155, A222, A223, A224, A225, A226, A239 and A252. The "Women Of Bond" style autograph series is updated with 17 cards only missing the numbers WA48, WA54 and WA56. Some of the cards are extremely limited such as Halle Berry and Sheena Easton. For the "Full Bleed" series they created 18 new cards. Among these Full Bleeds we have Peter Lamont, John Glenn and Monty Norman.

“Case Toppers”

The first Case Topper card is a bonus when purchasing a full case, the card is an expansion to the already huge "Bond Girls Are Forever" insert set that started in 2003 when they released the "Women Of James Bond In Motion" trading cards. The card is numbered as BG74 and shows a picture of Miss Moneypenny as we know her from "SkyFall". The second Case Topper card is the start of a new series of autograph cards. The card is signed in gold ink by Sir Roger Moore. This card is known as the 6-Case Incentive and only available when purchasing at least 6 cases. When purchasing nine cases you receive the 9-Case Incentive card. This is a full bleed dual autograph card personally signed by Dame Judi Dench and Daniel Craig.

“Reward Card”

This time the reward card is an addition to the "Bond Girls Are Forever" insert set that started back in 2003 as part of the "James Bond Women In Motion" trading card set. Since then the series has been updated for six times including this one. There are two rewards cards BG46 and BG75. To obtain card BG75 you need 300 reward points. Each wrapper has a value of two points, so you need at least 7,5 boxes to get your free reward card. The list below gives us an indication of where to retrieve all our gorgeous "Bond Girls ".

Card vendors always purchase a huge lot of cases, as a bonus they receive a set of archive boxes. Yes a set because a factory sealed Archive Box is actually 4 seperate factory sealed boxes (labeled as A, B, C, & D) all shrinkwrapped together. Within these sealed boxes are sealed packs, and within those sealed packs you will find all of the following:

  • 99 Card Thunderball Throwback Insert Set
  • 120 Card Live and Let Die Throwback Insert Set
  • 93 Card Tomorrow Never Dies Insert Set
  • 19 Card Skyfall Expansion
  • 19 Card Relic Set
  • 51 Card Autograph Set
  • Case Topper Card - BG74 Bond Girls Are Forever (Moneypenny - SkyFall)
  • 6-Case Incentive Card - Roger Moore Gold Signature Series Autograph Card
  • 9-Case Incentive Card - Daniel Craig / Judi Dench Dual Autograph Card

It's just another way of collecting, but looking at the content above, there are still many cards to look out for, because there are only a few of the gold cards inside.

"Archive Boxes Versions A, B, C & D"

To store and protect your precious cards Rittenhouse created a special binder to hold this huge trading card set. The front is finished in a golden scuba vinyl showing a picture of Daniel Craig as James Bond in "SkyFall". The title on the binder is identical to the previous James Bond Archives binder except for the "2014 Edition". The reverse showing only the title on a golden background, I guess the creativity was gone. The promotion card P3 comes as a bonus when purchasing the binder. This exclusive card depicts a still of Daniel Craig in his first James Bond adventure "Casino Royale".

"James Bond Archives 2014 Edition Exclusive Binder"

Ninety-nine base cards retelling the whole "Casino Royale" movie in trading card format. Again the cards are printed in landscape while the reverse is printed in portrait. The text on the reverse is retelling the entire storyline. There is one parallel set displaying the same images, but stamped in the front with a golden movie title.
